This Week in Legalease
Online delivery of alcohol, data privacy, and an international emergency – what happened?
The first week of the last month of a terrible year has been a mixed bag.
It started with Sanjay discovering that he could now order beer on Swiggy. This pleased him to no end. It also made him wonder why online delivery of alcohol had taken so long to catch on. He wrote a story explaining this.
Tuesday’s piece was about Ola and Uber. Cab aggregators have enjoyed the benefit of growing without regulation. But the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released guidelines to reign in these unruly unicorns. Acche din over? Probably.
The next day, we shifted to data privacy. The Personal Data Protection Bill was being discussed in the Parliament. In his glory days as a technology lawyer, Saahil had worked on several data protection mandates. So, he wrote about why the new law was still stuck in limbo.
On Thursday, we took inspiration from the TV show Friends. In season 6, Ross and Rachel get married after drinking too much. The next morning, they try getting their marriage annulled. What does Indian law say about annulment? That’s what this piece answers.
Friday’s Legalease was the toughest we’ve written. Unknown to most of the world, refugees in Bangladesh are facing a humanitarian crisis. The government is shifting them to a remote island that has been described as “prison-like.” In this story, we explain what led to this mess.
Here’s hoping that you have a safe and wonderful weekend.
